Media Ownership Monitor launched in Moldova

Boosting transparency in Moldova's media landscape

Together with the Global Media Registry (GMR) and the Media Guard NGO, the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Moldova (Consiliul Audiovizualului) have launched a media ownership monitor, with information on Moldovan media outlets, including biographies of owners and contributors.

  • The database currently includes 45 media outlets (13 TV stations, 9 radio stations, 6 newspapers and 17 news portals) and, for the first time, 12 social media influencers.
  • The monitor was financed by the EU Delegation to Moldova and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Media independent from politicians, political influences, and hidden interests constitute elements of a healthy democracy. That is why monitoring and ensuring ownership pluralism and transparency in mass media is a crucial step towards a free society.

This initiative from the Audiovisual Council aligns with the provisions of Article 6(2) of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), which require regulatory authorities or bodies or other competent authorities or bodies to develop national media ownership databases.

Based on findings from Media Ownership Monitor Moldova, Moldova's media market has undergone considerable changes in recent years, and although there has been considerable progress in media ownership transparency, there are still multiple problems and institutions that only mimic transparency.
