EPRA Berne: Presentation of the Swiss Media Landscape
On the occasion of the 41st EPRA meeting in Berne held on 13-15 May 2015, Mr. Roger Blum, Chairperson of the Independent Complaints Authority (ICA) and Mr. Philipp Metzger, Director General of the Federal Office for Communications (OFCOM) presented an overview of the Swiss Media Landscape.
This powerpoint presentation includes general information on the background for media regulation, a description of the media regulatory system and its authorities, a brief overview of the audiovisual public service and of theautelevision and radio broadcasting networks.
Switzerland is a federal country with a central media regulation system based on a state regulation authority - the Federal Office of Communication (OFCOM) which is in charge of the regulation of radio, TV, telecommunication and post (EPRA-member) and three independent public regulators:

The Independent Complaints Authority (ICA) responsible for complaints against radio and TV programmes (EPRA-member)

The Competition Commission (COMCO) responsible for media concentration

The Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) responsible for the regulation of the telecommunication market
The main features of the Swiss media system also include:

A strong position of the public broadcaster SRG SSR, combined with several private TV and radio broadcasters fulfilling a public service mandate and a more liberal regime applicable to other private broadcasters;

A very high percentage of cable households, and to a lesser degree IPTV households, while DTT and satellite are less widespread forms of reception;

An advanced radio digitalisation process, with 98% of the population covered by DAB+ and 2 million DAB+ receivers sold; the sector envisages switching off FM between 2020 and 2024.
