French CSA analysis on audience figures for TV fiction in major European countries in 2013

On 2 June 2014, the French Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) published an analysis summarising the viewing figures for fiction television programmes in major European countries in 2013. The document presents lists of  the 10 most viewed television fictions in 2013 in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy.

  • The year 2013 was marked by strong differences in the consumption of television fiction in these five countries;
  • For the first time since 2010, the figures in France show parity between successful American productions and national productions;
  • In contrary, Spain recorded a return of American fictions to the top of the list, partly due to the decline in domestic production caused by economic crisis;
  • While the German viewing figures are very stable, in the UK we observe a slow and steady decline of daily “soap operas” in the Top 10;
  • In Italy, the new successful seasons of national series regain top of the ranking.
