the European Audiovisual Observatory, based on figures from the Yearbook 2012 and the MAVISE database, has published a press release highlighting the salient trends and developments of digital terrestrial television in Europe in 2012. According to the Observatory:

22 - out of the 27 - EU Member States are now switched over to digital, thus complying with the EU recommended deadline.

Switch-off is also complete in Croatia, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

Pay DTT services are available in 17 EU countries and 21 European countries.

86 new DTT channels were launched in 2012, many of them local and regional channels.

HD channels are available on DTT networks in 22 European countries.

In 2012, 369 new TV channels were launched (on all platforms) in the EU and 40% of these broadcast in HD
-
At the end of 2012, there were more than 8,270 TV channels available in the EU compared to 7,600 in 2011.
