On 17 December 2019, the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) held a workshop on Artificial Intelligence in the audiovisual industry, aiming at discussing the opportunities and challenges raised in this sector and especially in the journalistic and film fields.

A detailed summary of the workshop’s discussions was released on the EAO’s website on 27 February. As was the workshop, the publication is structured around three main sessions: Setting the scene, the impact of AI on the concept of editorial responsibility and the impact of AI on the quality and diversity of information of the audiovisual offer.

The summary also provides a review of the outcomes of the ‘World café brainstorming’ where participants were invited to discuss in small groups on the issues and the objectives to achieve.

At this workshop, Oliver Gerber, Vice-Chairperson of EPRA, presented the main challenges raised by AI for audiovisual regulators with examples of national policies from Germany, the UK and France. The EPRA Secretariat also attended the workshop.
