PSB funding changes in Finland

posted on 27 June, 2012   (public)

On 20 June 2012, the Finnish Parliament approved legislation on the new public service broadcasting tax. According to the new Acts, as of 1 January 2013, the activities of the Finnish public service broadcaster Yleisradio (YLE) will be funded from the state budget. The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) will no longer collect TV fees from that date.

A new YLE tax will be collected by the state tax administration. Individual taxpayers will pay 0.68 % of their income, min. 50 EUR and max. 140 EUR. Minors and those remaining under a certain income level will not be subject to the tax. Companies and organisations with the taxed income over 50 000 EUR will pay 140 EUR plus 0.35% of the portion that surpasses the said amount but not more than 3 000 EUR per year.

The Acts are still to be ratified by the President of the Republic of Finland.
