posted on 25 November, 2010   (public)

On 25 November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution entitled Public service broadcasting in the digital era: the future of the dual system, based on a report prepared by Ivo Belet (EPP, BE). The resolution was adopted in Plenary session by 522 votes to 22 with 62 abstentions.

The Resolution starts by reaffirming the European Parliament's commitment "to the dual broadcasting system, in which private and public service media play their respective roles, independent of political and economic pressure". It also states that public service TV and radio channels in some EU Member States stand in need of proper financial backing as well as safeguards for their independence. These broadcasters also need to boost their presence on the internet according to the Resolution.

It is worth noting that the Parliament also calls on the Member States "to intensify the cooperation between national media regulators within the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA) and step up the exchange of experience and best practice in relation to their respective national broadcasting systems."
