posted on 20 September, 2012   (public)

MEDIADEM, an EU funded research project on media policy-making processes in EU member states and candidate countries, recently published its comparative findings. The purpose of the research project is to identify which policy processes, tools and instruments can best support the development of free and independent media.

  • "Media freedom and independence in 14 European countries: A comparative perspective", engage in comparative analysis of the most pertinent questions and key issue areas for media freedom and independence in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, and the UK.
  • "The regulatory quest for free and independent media" examines the different forms of media regulation currently in place in the 14 countries covered by the project with a view to identifying common patterns, best practices and emerging problems.
  • The "second policy brief" in the MEDIADEM policy brief series provides a succinct overview of the main constraints or threats to the operation of free and independent media in the 14 countries under study.  Specific recommendations as to how these concerns might be addressed in practice by the various stakeholders involved are put forward.
