EPRA convenes in Tirana for its 63rd meeting
Accessibility of media content and classification of online services are key themes
The 63rd EPRA meeting is taking place on 20-22 May 2026 in Tirana. This closed event, hosted by the Audiovisual Media Authority, will gather about 130 delegates representing 47 member authorities, permanent observers and invited experts who will exchange on timely issues pertaining to media regulation in Europe.
Under the guidance of EPRA Chair Stephanie Comey, the Agora session on the morning of 21 May will highlight selected developments among EPRA members and permanent observer organisations.
The Agora session will also provide an opportunity to present EPRA's revamped website to members.
The first thematic session will focus on the role of media regulators in ensuring accessibility, while the second will address the challenges regulators face in classifying services in a rapidly evolving market.
Thematic session 1 "Making content available for all audiences" will take stock of improvements and continuing hurdles, discuss effective strategies to break down accessibility barriers, discover inspiring initiatives and innovative AI-driven solutions, and collaborations between regulators, disability organisations and media service providers. The perspective and challenges of small language markets, the effectiveness and reliability of AI-based accessibility tools and the changing role of media regulators will be the main threads to guide the discussion.
Thematic session 2 "Classifying services in a fast-changing media market" will facilitate practical discussions on the classification of emerging/hybrid online audiovisual media services, i.e. the legal qualification, the regulatory approaches and the implementation. Members will be encouraged to engage in a frank and informal exchange of views on what constitutes a proportionate and meaningful use of regulatory resources to effectively deal with the complexity of the changing media market.
EPRA provides an independent, agile and participatory forum that allows 56 media regulators in Europe (beyond the EU) to share information, best practices, experiences and expertise. EPRA does not take common positions but seeks to encourage independent, transparent and professional regulation and to raise awareness among its members of the consequences of the changing media ecosystem and to support them in the necessary evolution of media regulatory practices.
