On 19 January 2022, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) announced that Celene Craig had been appointed as Chief Executive further to a competitive independent recruitment process. She succeeds Michael O'Keeffe, after several months of interim.
Celene Craig has 30 years of experience in media regulation, having last occupied the position of Deputy Chief Executive at the BAI. She is currently a member of the ERGA Board and was the Chairperson of EPRA from 2015 to 2019.
In the coming months, she will prepare the ground for the transition of the BAI to the Media Commission, as foreseen by the recently published Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill.
The future Media Commission will be responsible for overseeing updated regulations for broadcasting and VOD services (transposing the Audiovisual Media Services Directive into Irish law) and the new regulatory framework for online safety.
The Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill was published by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media on The Bill will be introduced into the Houses of the Parliament in early 2022 for consideration for enactment.
