Irish BAI proposes changes to Rules on Television Subtitling, Sign Language & Audio Description

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) launched on 26 May 2014 a public consultation on proposed changes to the Rules governing the levels of subtitling, sign language and audio-description. The new Rules will update the current Access Rules in place since 2005 and last reviewed in 2012.

The proposals are aimed at making television more enjoyable and accessible for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, partially sighted or blind.  The Consultation sets out the proposed amount of subtitling, Irish Sign Language and audio description which Irish television broadcasters must provide for the period 2014 – 2018. The BAI is seeking responses from the general public, representative groups and broadcasters until 23 July.
