Online platforms and elections - New report from the Slovak Council
Slovak CMS issues monitoring report compilation on the functionalities of online platforms during elections
The Council for Media Services (CMS) has been publishing a string of election monitoring reports outlining the findings of its monitoring activity around the elections in the Slovak Republic over the past two years. A new report compiling all the relevant findings has now been published and is available in English.
The first part of the report deals with the election monitoring report for the 2024 European Parliament elections and include a comprehensive comparative analysis. The CMS monitored the functionalities of the digital platforms Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube during the pre-election campaign for the 2024 European Parliament elections. This detailed report covers the preparatory phase, the monitoring and data collection process, the evaluation of findings, and the identification of potential shortcomings.
The main objectives of the study are:
-
Evaluating the functionalities of selected content-sharing platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) in relation to sponsored political advertisements published during the 2024 European Parliament election period and campaign.
-
Describing and assessing the media literacy activities of these platforms in the context of the 2024 European Parliament elections and campaign.
-
Highlighting specific instances of deepfake videos published on these platforms in the context of the 2024 European Parliament elections and campaign.
The second part of the report presents the findings of a comprehensive comparative analysis, based on a comparison of similar monitoring activities conducted by the CMS during the 2023 Slovak snap elections to the National Council, the 2024 Slovak presidential elections, and the 2024 European Parliament elections.
This comparative analysis evaluates the following areas:
-
The functionalities of selected content-sharing platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) during the monitored electoral processes.
-
The description and evaluation of the platforms' media literacy activities in the context of these electoral processes.
-
The platforms' approaches to handling potential violations of their terms of service during the monitored electoral processes.
