Catalan regulator reports on minors' exposure to online gambling and betting advertising

Minors in Catalonia are exposed to extensive advertising of online gambling and betting, according to a report issued on 1st March 2017 by the Catalan Audiovisual Council (CAC).

  • The report notes that these adverts account for up to 45% of all the advertising shown during sports broadcasts on the radio and 20% on TV and are often broadcast before the watershed.
  • A lack of age-verification is also observed on most of the videos on Internet showing how to gamble, bet and win money in casinos and online sports betting.
  • Another conclusion is that online gambling is now the primary cause of problem gambling among the -26 years old.

The CAC believes that stricter regulation of online gambling and betting advertising is required in order to guarantee better protection of young people. According to its propositions, a new regulatory framework should set down effective mechanisms preventing under-18s to access online gambling and betting sites and better regulate gambling advertising.
