ROJ TV: Danish Radio and Television Board's response to criminal proceedings

posted on 25 November, 2010   (public)

The Radio and Television Board, the Danish Broadcasting Regulatory Authority, have discussed the possible reaction of the Board following the criminal proceedings being filed against the companies that operate ROJ TV for promoting the PKK's terrorist activities.

In the Radio and Television Board's view, the criminal proceedings do not in themselves give rise to or preclude the Board's reconsideration of the question of whether the broadcasts of ROJ TV contain "any incitement to hatred based on race, sex, religion, nationality or sexual orientation." Such an incitement would constitute a breach of the Danish Radio and Television Act.

However, the Board have decided to contact the Attorney General to discuss whether he is in the possession of any material due to the criminal proceedings against ROJ TV, which could be relevant for the Board when assessing whether it should reconsider its previous assessment regarding the broadcasts of ROJ TV. The Board is especially interested in material which has been broadcast later than the material, previously assessed by the Board in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
